Services for Non-Profit Organizations
Resume
I retired in March 2004, after 30 years of civil service employment. During that time, I worked for eight years at Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona, and 22 years at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. My job title during that time was either 'mathematician' or 'computer scientist'. For the entire 30 year span, I worked doing scientific software support and development, mostly on Unix computers. I have had 15 years of experience with Unix and Linux computers, serving as system administrator and software developer. I have also had responsibility for developing and maintaining several websites - the most extensive being for the Las Cruces Community Theatre where I completetely redesigned and rewrote the LCCT website and implemented a web-based online reservation request system. The LCCT site is now under new management since my departure from New Mexico.
I hold a B.S. degree in Mathematics from Idaho State University and an M.A. degree in Mathematics from Arizona State University.
Web Site Development
I am willing to undertake web site design and development for any bona fide non-religious non-profit organization in the United States. I will also consider other requests. This service can include: web site design, web site development i.e. create the files, web site set up and deployment. My personal web site is hosted by a commercial web host, and that is the avenue I recommend for customers. Cost is about $60 per year for the actual web hosting and $5 per year for a domain name - like www.rcarter.net or www.lcctnm.org or www.gatewayhabitat.org. The service I use also supplies up to 10 associated e-mail addresses. Visit www.netfirms.com for details.
Computer Consulting
I am also willing to do consulting for non-profit organizations. I have been working with the Portneuf Library District for some time now. We have deployed several public access internet computers running Mandrake Linux. The acceptance and reliability of these computers has really been quite remarkable. There have been no computer crashes in over a year, and a customer satisfaction survey showed universal acceptance and satisfaction. Linux is my forte - I don't have much expertice with MicroSoft applications; however nearly everything you need a computer to do can be done for free with Linux - the major exception being the running of specific proprietary MicroSoft software. I also have some experience with small networks, and digital photography.
